How are ISO standards developed?

An ISO standard is developed by experts working within a technical committee. Once the need for a standard has been established, the experts meet to discuss and negotiate a draft. The draft is circulated to ISO members for comments and voting. If consensus is achieved, it becomes an ISO standard; otherwise, it returns to the technical committee for further revision.

The pathway to developing an ISO standard

Six-step diagram: propose a standard to the relevant technical committee; if accepted, an expert working group prepares a draft; share the first draft with the technical committee and ISO Central Secretariat; if the committee reaches consensus, circulate the draft to national members for comment; after consensus, send the final draft to all ISO members; if approved by member vote, publish it as an ISO International Standard.
